Munif el-Razzaz Medical Centre
Munif el-Razzaz Medical Centre (Arabic: المركز الطبي منيف الرزاز al-markiz aṭ-ṭabbī munīf ar-razzāz) is a world-class academic medical centre in Beit Zera, Nasser City. Operating as a teaching hospital and medical research complex associated with Gamal Abdel Nasser University School of Medicine, Munif el-Razzaz Medical Centre was originally opened in 1991 as the new location for a redeveloped and expanded Gamal Abdel Nasser University Hospital and associated research facilities, namely the National Oncology Foundation Research Centre and JVIT–Nasser University Microbiology Lab, augmented by four new institutions—the Metropolitan Children's & Women's Hospital, Metropolitan Psychiatric Hospital, Red Cross and Red Crescent Academy of First Aid and Paramedicine, and National Institute for Field Surgery & Military Medicine. It is the largest medical facility in Western Asia, and attracts significant medical tourism.
Three decades after opening, the complex has more than tripled in size to include five additional (specialist) teaching hospitals, a self-contained emergency hospital replacing the original hospital's ER, eleven speciality research centres, two integrated mental health treatment & recovery centres (for men and women, respectively) also offering separate treatment of substance use and concurrent disorders, a dental hospital with dedicated emergency department, several primary care, occupational health & specialist clinics, a cooperative pharmacy supercentre, an interdisciplinary experimental laboratory, a public medical library, and a multifaceted local economy–including extensive residential developments and a large retail and service sector providing food, consumer goods, recreation facilities, child care & education–supporting the 60,000+ students, doctors, hospitals allied health professionals, administrative and support staff work and/or study full-time at the centre. All medical services are fully subsidised by the National Health Authority, which also funds much of the research activity conducted on site.
