Undersheriff of the Arab Union
The Undersheriff of the Union of Arab Republics (Arabic: عمداء اتحاد الجمهوريات العربية ‘amdā’ ittiḥād al-jumhūriyāt al-‘arabīyah) is the second-highest ranking sworn law enforcement official of the Union of Arab Republics (UAR; informally the Arab Union). The Undersheriff directs the day-to-day activities of the Arab Union Sheriff Service on behalf of the Sheriff of the Arab Union, by whom the Undersheriff is appointed and to whom s/he is immediately responsible.
Much of the Sheriff's responsibilities involve attending political events and congresses as well as representing the Sheriff Service at various domestic and international ceremonies, as well as regularly reporting to the Attorney-General. As such, much of the Sheriff's practical responsibilities are instead handled by the Undersheriff, who is also permitted to act on the Sheriff's behalf, including at the above-mentioned social events, in the event of the Sheriff's incapacitation or otherwise absence.
Traditionally, upon retirement of the Sheriff, the Attorney General appoints the current Undersheriff as the new Sheriff of the Arab Union, who himself is then tasked with replacing the office of Undersheriff, always an experienced sheriff's deputy of high rank (usually the most senior of the several assistant undersheriffs).
The incumbent Undersheriff of the Arab Union is Ridwan Baradust, appointed by Sheriff Rifaf Jarallah on 30 November 2017.
