Erbil is the capotal and largest city of the Kurdistan Autonomous Region, located in the centre-west of the region. According to the 2020 Arab Union census, Erbil has a population of 1,179,465. It has always been a majority Kurdish city, although to this day continues to have a significant Arab minority (22.35% according to the 2020 census), and many other smaller ethnic minorities as well, making it one of the most diverse and cosmopolitan cities in the Arab Union. It also has been ranked among the top five most livable cities in the Arab Union since 2010.
