Motor Vehicles Insurance & Regulatory Directorate
The Motor Vehicles Insurance & Regulatory Directorate (Arabic: ادارة الضمان والتنظيمية للمركبات الآلية idārat aḍ-ḍamān wat-tanẓīmiyah lil-markabāt al-ālīyah), colloquially known in Arabic by the acronym Idmark (إضمك iḍmark) or in English by the acronym MVD (for Motor Vehicles Directorate), is an agency of the Government of the Arab Union subordinate to the Ministry of Transportation. It is responsible for administration the national driver licensing system and vehicle registration database. It also provides vehicle insurance—by law, all registered motor vehicles in the Arab Union must be insured by the directorate, and provides insurance for all types of private and commercial vehicles with full liability protection for the operator with a clean driving record who can prove his sobriety. While the directorate has a monopoly on auto insurance, the licensing centres themselves do not sell insurance plans which are instead peddled by private third-party brokers.
