Santa Maria is an island in the Lesser Antilles, and the largest, most populated and northwesternmost island of the Commonwealth of Antilla. Constituting nearly 50% of the total landmass of the country and nearly 75% of its population, it is a tall island surrounded by atoll-like flatlants upon which much of the population resides. It is home to Christiansby, Antilla's capital and largest city, whose metropolitan area accounts for nearly two thirds of Santa Maria's total population. Christiansby proper sits immediately to the west of Petersberg, the main international port area of the country. The Christiansby metro area (including Petersberg) faces southeast toward English Bay, where many international container ships and others await moorage at the Port of Petersberg. The bay is also busy due to the ferry traffic connecting Marquesa and Parmesa, Antilla's other two main islands, who lie on the east side of English Bay.
