The Governorate of the Syrian Arab Republic (Arabic: محافظة الجمهورية العربية السورية muħāfaẓat al-jumhūrīyah al-ʿarabīyah as-sūrīyah) is the top executive authority of the Syrian Arab Republic, one of the 20 republics (federated states) of the Union of Arab Republics (UAR/Arab Union). The Governorate oversees multiple ministries and ministry-subordinate directorates (agencies), which manage public administration and most other domestic governing duties. The Syrian Arab Congress nominates the Governor of Syria, who is officially appointed to the office by the President of the Union of Arab Republics; the Governor of Syria chairs the Governorate and appoints its members, namely the Deputy Governor, Secretary of State and senior ministers.
